Hair Extensions Aftercare Guide

Proper care keeps your extensions looking seamless, lasting longer, and protecting your natural hair. Follow these do’s and don’ts for the best results.

After Installation

Post-installation wait time: Wait 24–48 hours before your first wash to let adhesive cure fully (especially important for tape-ins and keratin bonds). Avoid getting hair wet (including heavy sweating) during this time. Use dry shampoo on roots if needed.

Do:

•  Use lukewarm water; shampoo scalp only, condition mid-lengths to ends.

•  Wash 2–3 times per week maximum with sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo.

•  Brush 2x daily with a soft extension brush, always starting from the ends.

•  Use heat protectant and dry hair thoroughly (especially roots and attachment points—blow-dry fully to prevent moisture buildup that can weaken bonds/adhesive).

•  Limit heat styling to 170°C–180°C.

•  Apply argan oil daily on mid-lengths to ends; use a hair mask every 2–3 weeks.

•  Braid loosely or use silk pillowcases at night to keep extensions tangle-free.

•  Avoid very tight ponytails/high buns/updos that pull on bonds — these can loosen attachments and cause strain.

Don’t:

•  Over-wash or use harsh, protein-based, or sulfate-containing products.

•  Scrub vigorously or apply conditioner near roots/bonds.

•  Use regular brushes with hard bristles that can pull on bonds.

•  Apply excessive heat daily or without protection.

•  Use oil-based products near bonds.

•  Sleep with loose, untied, or damp hair.

•  Expose to chlorine, salt water, tanning products, or unsafe sunscreens.

What Brush Do I Use?

Look for brushes labelled “extension-safe” or “boar-nylon mix.”

Why? Boar bristles distribute natural oils for shine; nylon pins glide through without snagging tapes, bonds, beads, or wefts.

Avoid: Metal combs, tight-tooth brushes, or 100% hard plastic—they can catch and damage attachment points.

Can I Swim with My Hair Extensions?

•  Clip-ins: Remove before swimming—chlorine, salt, and sand will mat and dry out the hair.

•  Tape / Keratin / Slimline: Avoid swimming or protect with a tight braid + swim cap.

Why? Water weakens adhesive (tape/bonds) and loosens beads; salt/chlorine strips moisture and causes tangling. This can void your warranty.

If you must swim: Rinse immediately with fresh water + apply leave-in conditioner. Deep-mask within 24 hours. Book a professional check-up within 1 week.

What Sunscreen Is Safe for My Extensions?

Opt for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These sit on the skin’s surface and reflect UV rays without chemical filters that can stain or discolour extensions (especially blondes or light shades).

Avoid chemical sunscreens containing avobenzone or octocrylene, which can cause pink/orange brassiness via UV reactions. For direct hair protection, use a UV-protectant spray like Oribe Invisible Defense Spray.

Pro tip: Check labels for “mineral” or “physical” SPF. Apply to body with clean hands, wash hands before touching hair. Tie extensions in a bun during application and wait 10–15 minutes for absorption to prevent transfer.

Maintenance Appointments

Schedule regular refits/check-ups to keep extensions secure and your natural hair healthy:

•  Slimline weft: Refresh/move-up every 5-8 weeks.

•  Tape-ins: Refresh/move-up every 6–8 weeks.

•  Keratin bonds: Refit every 3–4 months.

Book these in advance—outgrowth can cause slippage, tangling, or strain on natural hair. Maintenance is also ideal for trims, color touch-ups, or deep treatments.

Recommendations for Best Results

Always use products specifically designed for hair extensions. Avoid shampoos, conditioners, or treatments containing:

•  Heavy mineral oils / Essential oils

•  Protein

•  Citrus extracts

•  High alcohol content

•  Keratin treatments

•  Lauryl sulphate

•  Medicated or toning shampoos

•  Fake tanning products or sunscreens containing avobenzone

•  Heavy / non-water-soluble silicones (e.g., dimethicone buildup types) — these can cause dullness, tangling, and residue over time.
